My Sister, Aunt Patty Cake

Aunt Patty Cake in Dublin on Good Friday, April 10, 2009!

Today would be my sister’s birthday. Pat, affectionately known as “Aunt Patty Cake,” would have been 82, born on December 7th, 1940–she was a year old the day the USA entered into WWII, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. Now not only are the Japanese our allies—but they are our family members too! Our brother, Sean, married Mariko and live in Kyoto and blessed our family with two beautiful daughters and now a grandnephew. Pat would have loved Leo!!

What I’m sharing today is a video of something incredible and quite possibly the highlight of my sister’s life—her trip to Ireland. Pat always talked about going, she always had a “thing” about Ireland. So while living in Switzerland, I bought her a ticket, and we enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime adventure together, documented on this video I’m sharing with family and friends.

Even though this video is old, poorly executed, and much longer than I’d remembered (34 minutes!)—I hope it will make you smile and you’ll enjoy celebrating my sister’s birthday with our family.

Who knows, GOD KNOWS, this might very well become an annual event, with me posting pictures or stories to keep Aunt Patty Cake alive in our memories.
